El Edén, San Ramón Region, Nicaragua
El Edén is composed of roughly 31 families that came together in hopes of becoming land-owning, sustainable farmers. Agros International (our partner NGO) is assisting these families in owning their own land by providing a land loaning opportunity. The families choose to live in this community and pay back the land loan to Agros while Agros teaches them how to diversify their crops and maintain a sustainable community. EWB-PSP has partnered with Agros on this project to assist the sustainable approach by providing irrigation in the community.
The community has 52 acres of organic coffee farms and 95 acres of farmland. EWB PSP hopes to create a proper, efficient irrigation system to assist in the sustainable care of these crops. Individual farmers have had some success in irrigation, but the community is looking for an efficiently engineered system to assist them in the greater area of farming on their land. The ultimate goal will be to have enough crops for the community as well as enough to sell at a nearby market.
